| | | | | | | | 2025 illustrated promising gains for carbon capture and storage (CCS). Alongside the collaboration of diverse and global CCS stakeholders and climate action advocates, the Institute was grateful to have contributed to the growing CCS journey, championing supportive policy measures, innovation, and knowledge-sharing efforts that drive this critical technology forward.
Throughout 2025, the Institute held engaging convenings and networking events, providing a platform to impart CCS insights. From regional forums and events held in the UAE, Japan, Morocco, Belgium, the United States, China, Malaysia and beyond, the Institute initiated dialogues and published thought leadership on the most relevant and impactful CCS topics and themes.
Mirroring the growing global interest, CCS technology and projects illustrated a steady scale-up in 2025. As unveiled in the Institute's flagship Global Status of CCS report, CCS saw a 54% year-on-year increase in operational projects.
As 2025 comes to an end, the Institute wants to thank you for being part of the CCS progress we have made together. CCS continues to be vital to achieving global decarbonisation, and the groundwork for its rollout is now taking shape in more countries than ever before. Below are a few CCS and Institute highlights, as we wrap up a promising year.
From all of us at the Global CCS Institute, we wish you a happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year ahead.

Released in October, the 2025 edition of the flagship Global Status of CCS report illustrated real CCS progress amid global uncertainty, showing how stronger policy, rising investment, and collaboration are keeping the technology on track. With a total of 77 projects now operating, and an additional 47 currently under construction, the project pipeline has continued its upward momentum. | | | | | | CCS Forums Gather Global Stakeholders
The Global CCS Institute organised and supported various regional CCS forums and events, including convenings taking place in Brussels, Washington D.C, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Abu Dhabi, Tokyo, and Ben Guerir. The engaging forums hosted thought-provoking presentations, interactive breakout sessions and workshops covering a range of topics, from CCS infrastructure, financing, policy mechanisms, and much more. Recordings of select forums and events are available on the Institute's website. We look forward to a fruitful line-up of events and convenings in the forthcoming year. | | | | The Institute Champions CCS at COP30
The Global CCS Institute joined the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), held in Belém, Brazil, to champion CCS as a key climate technology on the global stage. As an accredited UNFCCC observer, the Institute convened and contributed to flagship events, which included being part of the UNFCCC’s official side-event programming where we hosted discussions on carbon management technologies in hard-to-abate sectors. Following COP30, key takeaways from the negotiations were published and released in an Institute report, which notably highlighted a significant increase in the countries that now include carbon management in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
For yet another year, the Institute provided Secretariat services to the Carbon Management Challenge (CMC) - an international climate initiative which aims to see 1 gigatonne of CO2 managed annually by 2030 through carbon management efforts. In 2025, the CMC launched its stakeholder engagement mechanism, which included a convening at COP30 to explore how to keep climate and carbon management ambitions pushing forward. | | | | The Institute Provides Thought Leadership Advocacy for CCS
In 2025, the Institute published impactful technical reports and insights, responses to media reports, and also engaged in policy consultation processes. Some highlights include the Institute’s annual technology compendium, State of the Art: CCS Technologies, which showcased over 160 carbon capture and storage technology solutions. With contributions from over 80 companies, the publication highlights global innovations across the CCS value chain, illustrating how cutting-edge technologies are driving real-world progress toward a net-zero future. The Institute also published reports, primers, and insights on various topics, including CCS technologies and costs, geologic storage primers, a technical report on CO2 shipping, policy perspectives, and responses to publications in major outlets, including The Guardian and Nature.
